UH-1N Twin Huey

The UH-1N is the military version of the Bell 212 helicopter and has been in service since the early 70s. This twin-bladed, twin-engine 'Huey' is operated as a light utility and transport helicopter, command and control platform, medevac air ambulance, search and rescue (HH-1N) and close air support gunship.

Flight crew normally consists of 1 pilot, co-pilot (optional) and door gunner/crewchief. Up to 11 passengers can be accommodated in the UH-1N's cabin.
Typical armament of a UH-1N consists of a door gunner manning a M240D, GAU/16 .50 cal or GAU/17 Minigun. When configured for close air support, the UH-1N can carry 2 x 7 or 19-rocket pods attached to pylons either side of the sliding cabin doors. The UH-1N's minigun can be fixed facing forward and fired by a trigger on the pilot's cyclic stick.
Over the years, the UH-1Ns flown by the USMC has received numerous avionics upgrades. These include secure satellite communications, GPS navigation and a FLIR turret and Night Vision Goggles HUD for all-weather, day/night operation. The additional weight of these upgrades has degraded the UH-1N's flight performance somewhat. An upgrade program is underway to address these and other issues. The resulting UH-1Y will include more powerful engines, 4-blade rotors, digital cockpits and enhanced navigation systems.
